Care

How to care for your concrete product.

We are a family owned business operating since 1983. Our products are of the finest available anywhere.
There are a few things you should know about caring for Ornamental Concrete so you can enjoy it for many years to come. Concrete is probably the best and most affordable construction material in use today.
Since concrete is very hard it is also brittle and can be chipped or broken when dropped or struck with a hard object. A look at our highways will attest to the fact that concrete is not indestructible, but the ultimate life of well made concrete that has been kept in a favorable environment will last indefinately.
The use of good judgment in handling, transporting and it’s ultimate location is important. Be sure it has a solid footing and avoid locating it where water will accumulate and soak into the concrete.
You can fill or add water to a bird bath any time except when it’s completely empty in hot weather. Remember how hot concrete used to feel to your bare feet? When you apply cold water to a hot surface it can possibly create enough stress that may later develop a crack. As a rule of thumb it’s best to fill your bird bath during the cooler part of the day.
If concrete could be made absolutely watertight moisture wouldn’t be a problem, but all concrete will absorb a certain amount of water which isn’t a problem except in cold weather.
Water inside of concrete will expand when frozen and must expand. It is a problem not encountered in a temperate climate but in Kansas there are many freeze-thaw days that can destroy poorly made concrete statuary.
If the concrete is intended for use in areas other than far south it is very important that the concrete has good “durability” which is an industry term meaning a low absorption rate, while “Compressive strength” is a term applied to well made and strong concrete.
Although we are well pleased both the strength and durability of our concrete, as our sample tests are consistently at or above 5000 lbs. which is very high for ornamental concrete, we still recommend that you observe these basic rules for improved service.
